A Light to the World
As the days get a little longer and more light shines all around us, let us never forget our True Light. The light of Christ is blinding to those who have not seen it. One day a man came to a priest and asked, “Father how is your ministry?” The priest replied, “It is hard work, but the greatest work anyone can do. Tell me my friend, how is your ministry?” The man replied, “What are you talking about father?”
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and God’s own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9
This scripture passage describes a royal priesthood we all share and the ministry we are all called to do. It sometimes seems an arduous task or even awkward to think of the priesthood of all the faithful. All people in the Church, lay and clergy, are called to do ministry.
You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16
How we do this is of crucial importance. First as Christians, we must act, as Christ would have us act in all situations. You may have seen the catch phrase “WWJD: What Would Jesus Do?” We must care for our own soul, through prayer, fasting and receiving the sacraments and we are given much by God. Then we must turn the tables and become the one who gives as well. Jesus said, "Take heed what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you.” Mark 4:24
As God feeds us physically and spiritually we must feed others this most excellent food. Pick something to do to help share the light of Christ. Visit the elderly Volunteer in the church Reach our to teach our faith to those outside our church Help bring people back to church Think of something that you can do for Christ This is how we do ministry; we pick or find something to do for Christ based on our talents he has given us. Jesus said, "Take heed what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you.” Mark 4:24
May the Light of Christ you receive from God be the Light that you shine always to others in the ministry of the Royal Priesthood of Christ that you are a member.
